Introducing Canon Elan 7E
Canon Elan 7e also known as Eos 30 was introduced in 2000, five years after the Eos 50 / Elan IIe. There are 2 variations, Eos 33 / Elan 7 and Eos 30 / Elan 7e with Eye Control function.
This camera feels good in your hands, but not as good as Eos3 , or Eos1. The body is slightly smaller made from plastic and aluminium.
On the top left of the body you can find the main dial, and a shooting mode switch.
As you can see, Elan 7e has a diopter adjuster, something i was missing on Elan IIe.
Unlike Canon Eos3 , or Eos1n, Canon Elan 7e has a built in flash unit, which is really useful if you don’t want to cary an external flashgun.
I use to shoot with external flash units, and my canon 600ex rt works great with this camera,so I suppose you can use all the Ex flashes.
On the right side, you can find the focus knob selector, Eye Control switch, main function wheel, and shutter release button.
The Lcd provides all the useful information I need, but unfortunately is not illuminated like Eos 3 , Eos 1 or Eos RT
On the back door, you can find the on/ off switch function, metering, manual film rewind button, secondary function wheel, focus point selectors, and custom functions key.
Canon Elan 7e Issues
On the left you can find the camera back lever, which is so badly designed that it breaks all the time. I had two of them broken, and one of my friends used to change three of them. Canon Elan IIe has the same back lever, but it’s better build so it does’s snap. I really can’t understand why canon had to design a worse back lock for this camera, when they had a good one already. So, my Canon Eos 30 received a back lock transplant from a dead Canon Elan IIe, and now it works just fine. As a matter of fact, the back lock snapped just when i was ready to shoot for this review.
Custom Functions Canon Elan 7e
Autofocus works fine, but is not as fast as Elan IIe , Eos 1 or Eos 3. Canon Eos 30 has 7 af points, better than Elan IIe which has only 3. When shooting, i find Elan IIe better as it focuses much faster and more accurate. With Eos 30 you can control focus point manually, auto, or eye controlled. The Eye control function is not very useful ,and not reliable, but it’s a nice feature to have.
Canon Eos 30 is a great mid level camera, and i really love shooting with. If you want one, pay attention on the back lock , and prepare yourself to change it as it may brake. Af is fine, not great, it just works. Canon Elan IIe is a better overall camera, but i really like Elan7e more. I guess it’s all about the black paint :)) . If you can afford go for Eos1n , or Eos3 ,which is a real beast.
